Privacy Policy

Mr. Tan is built on a simple principle: your skin and your location are nobody's business but yours. The app has no accounts, no servers and no analytics. This document explains exactly what data we touch, why, and where it stays.

Who we are

Mr. Tan is developed by Victor Vervloet (Ghent, Belgium). Questions or concerns: victorvervloet@icloud.com.

Data we collect

We do not collect or store any data about you on any server we control. There is no Mr. Tan account system. Everything you give the app stays on your device.

Specifically, the following data is stored locally on your device using the operating system's standard secure storage:

• Skin profile: Fitzpatrick skin type, protection type + SPF, age group, acclimatization level and a photosensitivity flag — values you enter during onboarding.
• Preferences: chosen theme, language, notification toggles, spoken-alert preference, tan-time goals.
• Sessions: the start time and duration of any sunbathing session you start, used to drive the in-app countdown and Live Activity.
• Trips: destinations, dates and forecast snapshots for any vacations you plan.
• Cached UV data: the last UV-index response per ~11-kilometre grid cell, kept so the app degrades gracefully when offline.

This data is not transmitted to us. It is not transmitted to anyone. It lives in the app's local storage and disappears the moment you delete the app.

Network requests

When the app has a network connection, it makes anonymous requests to a small number of third-party services:

1. Open-Meteo (open-meteo.com) — for the current UV index, the hourly UV curve, sunrise/sunset times and multi-day forecasts for your coordinates or a chosen destination. Coordinates only.
2. BigDataCloud (api.bigdatacloud.net) — for reverse-geocoding coordinates to a city name on platforms where the operating system's geocoder is unavailable. Coordinates only.
3. Open-Meteo Geocoding (geocoding-api.open-meteo.com) — only when you manually search for a city in the location picker or vacation planner. Search query only.

We chose these services because they require no API key and accept anonymous client-side requests.

Location

If you grant location permission, Mr. Tan reads your coordinates on demand from the operating system to feed the calculations above. The coordinates are not stored on any server. You can revoke location access at any time in the operating system settings and use the manual location picker instead.

Notifications, Live Activity and widgets

If you grant notification permission, Mr. Tan schedules local notifications on your device — reapply reminders, turn-over reminders, hydration reminders, spoken alerts and the session-end alert. When a session is running, Mr. Tan also drives a Live Activity on your Lock Screen / Dynamic Island and can expose a home-screen widget with your current UV snapshot. All of these are produced by the operating system; they never leave your device.

Purchases

Mr. Tan is free for 3 days and can be unlocked forever with a single non-consumable in-app purchase (€0.99). Payment and entitlement are handled by Apple's StoreKit; we never see your payment details. The app only asks StoreKit "is this Apple ID entitled?" and caches the answer on-device. The "Restore purchase" button in the paywall re-queries Apple.

Tracking, advertising and analytics

There is none. We do not use a third-party analytics SDK, a crash-reporting SDK, an advertising SDK or any tracking pixel. We do not collect identifiers like the IDFA or any device fingerprint.

Children

Mr. Tan is suitable for all ages and we collect no data, so there is nothing to disclose about children specifically. The app contains an age-group option (child / standard / over 60) but this is used only to apply a more cautious calculation margin on-device.

Data sharing and selling

We have no data about you to share or sell. There is no business arrangement under which we would.

Your rights

Because no data leaves your device under our control, there is no request you need to send us to access, correct or delete it. To delete every piece of data Mr. Tan holds about you:

• Open the app → Settings → "Reset everything", or
• Delete the app from your device.

Both actions wipe the local storage entirely.

Changes to this policy

If we ever change how Mr. Tan handles data, we will update this page and bump the "Last updated" date above. Material changes will also be announced inside the app.

Medical disclaimer

Mr. Tan provides a science-based estimate of safe sun exposure. It is not a medical device and not medical advice. Individual variation in burn time is significant. Always avoid burning, use sun protection appropriate for your conditions, and consult a doctor if you notice unusual skin changes or suspect sunstroke.
